Algeria's strawberry production is growing spectacularly.

A kilo of strawberries costs less than a kilo of potatoes: you're not dreaming, that's what you could find on Algerian markets in April, according to this article published by the electronic newspaper TSA, which highlights this astonishing paradox. While the price of potatoes has risen in recent months to 160 dinars (1.07 euros), the price of strawberries has fallen considerably in four years, from 400 to 100 dinars, or from 2.67 to 0.67 euros per kilo!

Local market no longer sufficient

A drop that suggests an overproduction of strawberries that the domestic market is struggling to absorb. Skikda, Tipaza, Jijel: many of the wilayas along the Mediterranean coast have entered this promising market. The country's ideal climate, combined with modern farming techniques, have enabled Algerian farmers to produce some of the highest-quality strawberries in the region. However, the saturation of the domestic market has led to a situation where farmers are unable to sell all their produce at prices that reflect the quality and effort invested. The complexity of storing this fruit makes it even more necessary to dispose of the surplus at knock-down prices.

Building a network

Clearly, the only way to make the most of this surplus production is to develop exports. But as International Supermarket News points out, although the quality of Algerian strawberries is high, logistical problems still prevent the fruit from reaching international markets efficiently. Let the magazine come to this logical conclusion: "The challenge lies not in the quality of the product, but in the ability to get it out of the country and into the hands of consumers around the world. With the right infrastructure, marketing and investment, Algeria's strawberry surplus could be transformed into a lucrative export opportunity".

But to build a sales network, you need partners. And for that, one date and one address: from Sunday April 12 to Wednesday April 15, 2026, at the Algiers’ Exhibition Center – Safex, for the next edition of Djazagro!
